Paris, Orlando, San Bernardino, Manchester, and now the London Bridge — freedom is under attack all over the globe. Sadly, our world is united by only one thing, the danger of raw, ugly, deadly terrorism. It is brought to us by the radical Islamists whose ideology preaches hate and domination; and, violence is their method of choice. We must all join to fight their ideas and their carnage.

The messages we hear after each attack are of tolerance, understanding and unity. We’re told the way to let the Islamists know they’re not victorious is to carry on as usual. The fallacy here is that “business as usual” fails to increase security measures as the successful attacks increase.

We need change and the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, launched an aggressive countermeasure during her press conference last Sunday morning saying,

“It will only be defeated when we turn people’s minds away from this violence and make them understand that our values – pluralistic British values – are superior to anything offered by the preachers and supporters of hate.”

Likewise, the United States is unified by the core values of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and other invaluable freedoms.  Both of our countries, and all freedom-loving people throughout the world, need to clearly state these are a better way of life than the oppression and degradation offered by the Islamists and take appropriate actions to show a clear alternative. PM May went on to say,

“we cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed.”

Most Muslims living in free countries share the desire to live in safety and simply practice their religion in peace. Labeling the problem as “all Muslims” is not accurate and is highly damaging to the unified goal of defeating radical Islamism. We must enlist the help of moderates to root out the Islamists in their midst, so we are not targeting all Muslims. That way we can separate those who wish to subjugate us all from those who respect and desire universal freedom.

Many American Muslims are true red, white and blue. They believe in the sanctity of America, embrace the values, and choose to assimilate in our free Western society. We need to include them as allies not alienate them by lumping them in with those seeking to destroy the free world.

Lone wolves are rare, known wolves are many. Those planning disastrous activities are often known within their own communities and by law enforcement. Following recent trends, second generation immigrants have dominated the homegrown terrorist landscape. We need to figure out why they turn against the freedoms within which they were raised; and, implement effective preemptive measures where we can and countermeasures when we must.

We need to empower law enforcement agencies weighted with the great challenge of sifting out the bad guys before they have a chance to strike. A more effective security posture is possible but will take a stronger national approach to defending our homeland security than our stance has been previously.

Identifying trends that link the ideology of Islamism with the Islamists who plan to carry out the attacks is essential. While protecting the individual rights and freedoms of Americans, we must also acknowledge the necessity of enhanced surveillance and other measures. It is crucial we collectively support enhanced security, here and abroad, before the next massacre.
