Happy New Year! What’s on America Matters’ radar this week?

We are tracking the beginning of the 117th Congress, the Georgia Senate runoff election, the Electoral College counting results, and updates on the COVID-19 vaccine campaign.

The 117th New Congress is sworn in this week. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been re elected Speaker of the House. The U.S. House of Representatives is split 222- 211 (D). The Senate is split 48-50 (R) with 2 Georgia Senate seats still open.

The Georgia Senate runoff race is set for January 5. President Trump and President-Elect Biden are hosting final rallies to bolster support. Control over the Senate is at stake in this election. Democrats must win both elections to tie, and have Vice President elect Harris cast the deciding vote to give them control.

On Jan 6 the Senate will open certified electoral college results from States. Dozens of GOP Reps. and several GOP Senators plan to object, but without a majority in both chambers of Congress, it won’t affect the results of the electoral college count.

More than 4.2 million Americans have been vaccinated in the last few weeks. Over 20 million vaccines have been delivered to States. We must continue social distancing, wear a mask, and wash hands.
